C & D's Best Weekend Ever!

Have you ever felt like you fit an entire week's worth of activity into a two day weekend? Well, we did, and every bit of it was fabulous! Here's the rundown:

Friday: First day back at work for C. Was not lovin' having to sit on keister from 8:30-2 listening to a skinny lady talk about autism. It had nothing to do with her or the topic, she was actually very interesting with lots of anecdotes and examples and I got a ton of great information that can easily be applied to the 4-5 age group. No, dear readers, my problem was a little more personal than that. You see, C has been off of her daily caffeine ritual for the past two months, with the exception of the occasional Sunday Starbucks or it's-summer-and-I-have- to-be-up-early-for-something-important cuppa joe. I wein myself off every summer because A. summer is hot and coffee is hot and I'd rather drink something cold in the hopes that it will make me feel cold because I don't like to be hot and B. all the magazines and newspapers and tv reporters say caffeine is bad and why drink something bad if you don't really need it? Anyway, I had a HUGE cup of coffee that morning on the drive to school (being very careful not to spill in Zippy) complete with coffeemate Amaretto Creamer and some Splendas. By the time the lady started talking, I was wired for sound and ready to blow the speakers out. Seriously, I was so keyed up I was actually jumping in my chair. Everyone thought I was taking notes like a good little Pre-K teacher. Nope, I just had to do something to keep my hands from shaking completely off my arms. At lunch with the 3rd grade team (my former team of peeps), my mouth went into overdrive so much that I finally had to stop talking and eat my salad because everyone was ready to leave. Horrors of all horrors, I never even got back up to get my favorite tuna skroodle or fettucine corn pasta salads and some gingerbread!!
We got back to school and the lady only talked for another hour. I spent the rest of the time at school trying to figure out the logistics of my new classroom. Left around 4, picked up food from
Chef for you and took that back to my parents' house to wait for D. He got there shortly after 5 and we headed off to Lupe Tortilla for fajitas and margaritas with K & L. It was a very good time-- they are one of our very favorite couples to double-date with because they're cute, funny, and sarcastic-- just like us! We were sitting behind a family with four children and one of the children was VERY unhappy and not afraid to let the entire restaurant know about it. Yes, I know, my day will come and that's why I'm going to stop right there. Anyway, we finished the night at a cute new little coffee and gelato bar that is within walking distance of Lupe's. Land of Sucrose is becoming one happening place to live and learn, I'm telling you! Left at 10:30, went back to parents' house and hit the sack like two tons of bricks, so very sleepy were we!

Saturday: Started at 7:30, when we got a wakeup call from my dad. He was phoning us from the driveway, where he was having a wee walk with Otis and the two other dogs that are living in their house. We made haste to get ready and then drove him over to the hospital to have a little, er, procedure involving his colon and a scope. As he was being "Roto-rootered", D 'n me decided to make hay while the sun was shinin' so we drove into the big city of H-town and had a delightful breakfast at the 59 Diner on Shepherd. After that we scooted around the corner to Whole Foods Market. Everyone knows you don't dare go somewhere like Whole Foods or Central Market on an empty stomach unless you plan to take out a second mortgage on your house. It was D's inagural visit, though, so we still probably bought a little more than was necessary. Got the call to come and pick up dad while we were perusing the prepared food sections-- I think that phone call saved us more money than anything! We zipped back to Sucrose land and a very groggy papa bear. Got him some hot chocolate for his tummy pains, took him home and tucked him into bed. D decided it was a perfect time for a nap. I tried to nap too, but the coffee I drank at breakfast made it impossible, so I watched Fools Rush In, which is one of those movies that I always watch from beginning to end no matter how many thousands of times I've already seen it. Other movies in that category include When Harry Met Sally and You've Got Mail, which are both also on my top ten list of favorite movies.
Dad woke up around feeling refreshed and slightly less full of air, (he he!) so I made him a yummy lunch of Sonoma Chicken Salad and Seeduction Bread from WF. D ate his spring rolls and then we watched My Life, which made D a little misty(he's going to kill me when he reads this.) I kept from crying by thinking about Michael Keaton as Beetlejuice. Yucky.
After the movie we went over to see my new best friend, Karen M, who was housesitting for a co-worker. The house was nice, but the saltwater pool complete with tropical landscaping and covered outdoor kitchen was not to be believed! We drifted and soaked up the sun for a few hours before we got really hungry for all-you-can-eat snowcrab legs at Pappa's with the Papa bear. Yummy! We slept REALLY well that night!

Sunday: Woke up, well-rested, at 9:00 and hungry for some eggs n' bakey, so we decided to see if the new sandwich joint was open for breakfast. It was! We each enjoyed our yummy bacon, egg, and cheddar cheese breakfast sandwiches at the Earl of Sandwich. That place is awesome! We stuck around, reading the newspaper and their cool free magazines until I saw a few things I wanted for the house in the Target flyer, so we left and drove the 1/16th of a mile to the Target (E of S is in the front section of the Target-anchored shopping center) and bought those things I couldn't survive another 35 seconds without, that being a cool multi-frame collage for our wedding pictures and a jazzy rug for the entryway. As we were heading back to the car, D decided he was hungry for lunch! Mind you, we had only finished breakfast 2 hours earlier. Despite my attempts to reason with the grumblies in his tumblies, we returned to the Earl of Sandwich. I wasn't going to order anything, since we have enough food in our house to feed an entire orphanage full of growing teenage boys, but I noticed a sandwich called the caprese that I just couldn't bring myself pass to pass up. It was, without a doubt, one of the most amazing things I've ever eaten, a symphony of simplicity with basil, tomato, and fresh mozzarella served up on a crusty artisan loaf brushed with olive oil and sprinkled with salt and pepper. Amazingly enough, my new best friend Karen M. said it's even better when it's cold, making it an even simpler symphonic sensation. I was getting pretty full after the first half, but there was no way I was letting even the smallest morsel of that puppy go to waste. I shared the last bite with D, since I had already eaten the tomatoes that are his nemesis.
We went back to the house of the parentals and watched Land of the Dead on HBO. For those of you who don't know this about us, D and I are somewhat aficionados of zombie flicks. It started when I was momentarily obsessed with the new version of Dawn of the Dead last spring. My obsession spread to D like the virus (or various other strange phenomena) that creates those cuddly, flesh-eating, brainless blokes. We had already seen Land of the Dead, of course, but we noticed all kinds of cool things that we missed during the first viewing. Classics such as the priest zombie who was this close to being completely decapitated, but still managed to take one more victim before his final demise.
After the movie, D decided to head for home to make some headway on the floor, while I went and floated in the saltwater pool with KM for a couple hours. We said our goodbyes at 5 and I headed back to the land of Fructose.

Okay, you should know that I don't plan to make every post as long as War and Peace. It was just such an awesome weekend that I didn't want to leave out any important details! Trust me, it could have been longer. You're welcome.

I shall end with a picture of D with his half-finished floor. He's doing a great job, although I have heard him utter more than his fair share of choice words during the process. I had to touch up his eyes a little with the Photo editor-- his dark eyes caught the flash and made him look like Satan's little helper. Didn't want any of you sending over a priest looking for a demon to exorcise!
